An Appeal from a Student: Please Help Us Protect Our Future

Dear elders, we students are growing up in a world surrounded by mobile phones, computers, televisions, batteries and many other electronic devices. Technology has improved our education, communication and daily lives. However, old and damaged electronic products are rapidly becoming a serious environmental challenge. We respectfully appeal to you—the decision-makers in our families, workplaces and communities—to help us manage e-waste responsibly.

Please do not mix unused electronic items with household waste or dispose of them in open spaces. E-waste can contain harmful substances that may pollute our soil, water and air when dumped, broken or burned carelessly. Such pollution can affect human health, animals and the environment for many years. What appears to be a small discarded device today may become a major danger for our future.

E-waste can be handled responsibly by following a few simple steps. Before replacing a device, please consider whether it can be repaired or upgraded. Electronics that are still functioning can be donated, exchanged, refurbished or passed on to someone who needs them. Buying durable products and avoiding unnecessary upgrades can also reduce the amount of waste we generate.

When an electronic product can no longer be used, please store it safely and keep batteries and damaged devices away from children. Hand over e-waste only through authorised collection centres, approved recyclers, producer take-back programmes or organised collection drives. Please delete personal information from mobile phones and computers before submitting them for recycling. Responsible recyclers can safely separate harmful materials and recover valuable metals for reuse.

We students are ready to learn, create awareness and participate in school e-waste collection campaigns, but we need your guidance and support. Please help our schools organise awareness programmes and safe collection drives, and encourage families, offices and neighbourhoods to participate. Your responsible actions will become powerful lessons that our generation will carry forward.

The Earth belongs not only to us, but also to generations yet to be born. We sincerely request you to help us inherit a cleaner, safer and healthier planet.
